Dream Come True Recipient, Calandra Locket, is Accepted into Nursing School

Calandra Locket, one of our Dream Come True recipients, is on her way to realizing her dream! She just got word last week that she has been accepted into the San Jacinto college school of nursing RN program. We are so proud of Calandra and her accomplishments. It has been a long process getting to this point and she has overcome many hurdles, including having to relocate to a city that can provide specialized medical services for her daughter who suffers from seizures. Calandra exemplifies the Dream Come True mission, as a single mother raising four children, she never gave up and is on her way to being a nurse and following her dream of a career and financial independence.

Calandra has been a Dream Come True “Dream Achiever” for over a year now. Calandra overcome a difficult childhood of poverty and very challenging circumstances as a child and young person. She has shown a great deal of resilience in successfully pursuing her education before she received help from the foundation. She attended college in Austin in 2011 and moved to Houston, where she could receive better attention for one of her children who faces serious medical challenges. Calandra is a person who has been upbeat in the most difficult circumstances. She is articulate, and a very inspiring speaker. She has done great work in presenting the Dream Come True Foundation mission of helping people “on the edge of success.

Calandra Lockett

Calandra Lockett, our Dream Come True Achiever, has been working through a successful, but very challenging year. Calandra’s mainstay in the Dream come true foundation is Heather Bailey, her mentor. Heather has spent countless hours mentoring Calandra and helping her even with childcare. Calandra finished her first courses at Austin Community College in Austin with solid grades in the academic subjects she’ll need to do well in to graduate from nursing school, which is her goal. Calandra visited with the Dream Come True Board of Directors on Monday, August 1^st. Calandra told us of her determination to be successful in her studies and graduate as a nurse.

Calandra felt the need to move from Austin to Houston because of the medical issues that her daughter Whitney has experienced. She is in fact getting the kind of medical treatment she needs in Houston, which has better medical specialists in the field Whitney needs. Calandra has had a challenging year both academically and with her family. Calandra is a single mom with three children of her own and one from a sister, now deceased. Calandra is now in the process of registering for school and will have more updates for the board as we move forward. The board has agreed to give Calandra support through October to see how her plans develop.

Chris Rivera

Chris Rivera (right) has turned 21 this month! He is the youngest recipient of Dream Come True help and mentorship. Dr. Thaw Sint (left) is Chris’s mentor, and has counseled Chris on his education. Chris is presently studying at Austin Community College. Thaw helped Chris get a job within the medical field, which Chris hopes to study.

Chris came out of the background of the Austin Children’s shelter and has lived in a series of foster homes. Chris has had many challenges in growing to adulthood, and Thaw has helped him with these challenges. Chris is doing well, especially understanding his challenges.

Grants and Glasses

So–Carmella and the kids are back in school. Tonight they’re coming over to work on a Dream Come True grant application Kathie Tovo on our Board is writing and GLASSES. Carmella needs glasses and a donor is going to provide those for her. Even super-star students have to be able to see the professor!

Scaling the Dream

It’s amazing to look back over the past year that Carmella and her family have been Dream Come True recipients. She just completed a very demanding summer school session and has now begun her senior year at St. Ed’s. Just 2 semesters away from achieving her dream of a bachelor’s degree in Social Work. We’ve all learned a tremendous amount over the past year and shared great times, lots of laughter, and some tears and fears along the way. We’ve been able to multiply our financial contributions about 2.5 times by generous in-kind gifts and services. With all that we’ve learned, we are now ready to begin “scaling” the Dream Come True to assist more individuals and families. Funding permitting, we plan to support several new recipients in the next 12 months. We hope many people will join the Dream Come True Board and volunteers in breaking the cycle of poverty–one life and one family at a time.

Amazing things Happening–Dream Come True Amazing Volunteers

Here’s what’s happening today. We’re on our way to accomplishing the exciting major goal of The Dream Come True Foundation goal is to help Carmela graduate from St. Edward’s University by May 2010.

She will have come from being an illiterate 14 year old runaway to graduating with honors. Her major is in social work. Carmella will not only have a future with bright opportunities. She will have a lifetime to help others achieve what she is achieving.

We need $20,000 during the next 10 months to achieve this goal. Right now we’re accomplishing this goal litertally one month at a time.

We have amazing volunteers who are helping achieve this goal one month at a time.

We’ll be highlighting these volunters day-by-day in this blog.

Sara Barnard created our new Dream Come True logo. It totally captures the spirit of the Dream Come True. Sara is a talented designer and artist. She may be contacted at Sara Barnard (srrandolph@gmail.com).

Dawn Lacallade, of SolarWinds, generously donated her time as our web/blog consultant.

Donors give about $1,400 this month, just shy of our basic expenditures. September is a very critical month, and we need your help in any amount.

Childcare for Kade: Carmella’s youngest son lost his childcare when the childcare facility he was attending lost it’s funding. Ellen and Harry Cablock stepped in with a very generous donation. Ronnie and Cristie Dittmar actually kept Kade in their home a week while Carmella was finishing summer school.

Carmella became very ill with a migrane headache just before her finals that lasted for several days. Thaw Sint, MD, of the Dream Come True board, treated her at no cost the same day when she needed it.

Spanish II turned out to be a bigger challenge than we had anticipated, and Jack Speer became Carmella’s Spanish tutor.
