Where the Dream Begins

Where the Dream Begins–With Tough Realities,
True Hope, and Great Allies

austinhomeless12The Dream Come True Foundations begins with the tough realities of poverty.  Most people who are in poverty will never escape it.

When you’re driving down the streets of a large city like Austin, Texas–or your city–summer temperatures at 108 degrees or winter at 25 F–you see the people from your car window out there looking for bucks to keep alive.  You go through a lot of emotions.  Povery people are surrounded by air conditioned shelters, job counseling, educational  programs.  Few will ever access these programs.  Short term charity is good.  All great religions and humanitarian movements teach it.

There are people who come from impossible situations who dare to dream.  The are people who are determined to educate themselves and make a difference in the world.  These are “on the edge of success.”  Our mission is to “make their dream come true.”   We believed we could find these unique individuals and help them.  We also knew we would need allies to help us.

Here are a few:

LifeWorks.  An Austin-based non-profit that provides a full range of  educational and social services to bring people from poverty to the middle class.  LifeWorks has become the incubator of The Dream Come True Foundation.

Austin Community Foundation.  A huge resource for non-profit organizations who has served Dream Come True as a parent organization that has managed donations.

Tarrytown United Methodist Church.  A community of believers who has provided initial donations and loving leadership.

The Dream Come True Board of strong community leaders.

The Dream Come True Foundation has been a part of bringing Elena, a single mother of two children, from an undocumented housekeeper to becoming a professional in a large organization with a car and a good future.
